American painter and director of the 20th century. Came from a Jewish family, raised in a Jewish settlement in what is now Latvia, then part of the Russian Empire. Attended the Bloom Academy of Fine Art in Riga, then studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin. With the outbreak of World War I, he was drafted into the Russian army. In 1916 he deserted, fled to the USA via China and Japan, lived first in Seattle and from 1920 in Los Angeles. Successful artist, worked in special effects for Paramount Pictures and created many murals. Influence of German Expressionism, tendency to geometrization of forms with cubist and surrealist tendencies.
