Joseph Heintz, originally from Basel, was the court painter of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague from 1590.
A small medallion depicts St. Catherine of Alexandria. He wears expensive clothes made of heavy fabrics in blue and crimson. Caravaggist Bartolomeo Cavarozzi also created similarly conceived figures. With her hand on her chest and her gaze raised to heaven, she stands for her faith despite threats to be tortured on the bicycle shown behind her.
