The Welsh landscape painter Richard Wilson is one of the most important British landscape painters of the 18th century. He was heavily inspired by Claude Lorrain's imaginary landscape painting.
The painting shows Lake Avernus in the light of an early evening. An ancient ruin is in the background. Two trees frame the picturesque scene on the right side. Lake Avernus is located in the volcanic region near Naples and it is part of the Phlegraean Fields. The region is associated with ancient mythology and still considered a pleasant holiday destination due to its natural beauty. Many artists of the 18th century were inspired by the classical landscape painting.
There are various versions of this work by Wilson, his students and successors. The present picture is one of Wilsons highest quality versions. The most famous version was can be found in the Tate Gallery London, and is dated circa 1765.
