Venezian Master, 16th century, Titian – circle, Saint Jerome in Penitence
The penitent Saint Jerome is portrayed in the center of the scene, kneeling in adoration of the crucified Christ, immersed in the solitude of the nature of a mountainous landscape in which a small church can be glimpsed on the left. The wide landscape is described with great accuracy, and the chromatic gradation from green to blue tones gives the scene a sense of perspective depth. The symbols placed at the feet of the saint refer to meditation and ascetic life; such as the skull and the open book. The painter shows a profound knowledge of the stylistic works of Titian, who represented this theme many times in the course of his career. The influence of Flemish art on the work of this artist is visible in the attention to detail, and in the magnificent rocky landscape that extends into the horizon. Oil on canvas, 101 x 89,5 cm
